By Maria I mean Maria Tănase’s songs, and those of people that were inspired by her and keep the traditional singing alive (such as Loredana, for instance). I mean a fast beat of the music, yes, with some Oriental background, that cannot leave anyone untouched. Maria Tănase was born in Bucharest in 1913 and died in 1963. She worked with George Enescu and Constantin Tănase. Then there was Ioana Radu (born in Craiova in 1917, she died in Bucharest in 1990), with her romanțes. Music that nobody can deny, that was, is and will always be there, up and loud. Apart from the nasty traffic, inhabitants’ disrespect to many things and little presence of the Marks and Spencer, Bucharest was and still is about these songs. Enjoy!
